چکیده
Little is known about the metabolism in the animal body of monoalkylbenzenes other than toluene and ethylbenzene (cf. Williams, 1947). The information available suggests that the n-alkyl side chains undergo w-oxidation followed by $-oxidation of the terminology (Rules of Carbohydrate Nomenclature, J. chem. Soc., 1952, p. 5108), glucosiduronic acids) andthe alcohols asnon-reducing glucuronides. These possibilities are shown below (where G= CAH9,0) for the case of n-propylbenzene.

Studies in detoxication. 69. The metabolism of alkylbenzenes: n-propylbenzene and n-butylbenzene with further observations on ethylbenzene.
An account of our studies on the metabolic fate of toluene, ethyl-, i8opropyland tert.-butyl-benzenes has been given in earlier papers (Smith, Smithies & Williams, 1954a, b, c; Robinson, Smith & Williams, 1955; Robinson & Williams, 1955). The present paper deals with n-propyland n-butyl-benzenes. These two compounds were previously studied by Thierfelder & Klenk (1924), who showed that npropylb...
متن کاملStudies in detoxication. 60. The metabolism of alkylbenzenes: isopropylbenzene (cumene) and derivatives of hydratropic acid.
isoPropylbenzene (cumene) is used as a solvent for cellulose lacquer, although not extensively. It has narcotic properties but no toxic effects in man have been reported (see Browning, 1953). When fed to rabbits it causes the excretion of considerable amounts of conjugated glucuronic acid and the urine reduces Benedict's reagent (Smith, Smithies & Williams, 1954a), but nothing definite is known...
متن کاملStudies on the Influence of Various Metabolic Uncouplers on the Biodegradation Rate of Toluene in a Biofilm Bio-Filter Reactor
Biological inhibition of air pollution has vast advantages over physicochemical methods. One of the biggest challenges faced by researchers with traditional bio-filter in controlling Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) such as Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylene (BTEX) is, low degradation rate (elimination capacity) and accumulation of very high biomass. The use of metabolic uncouplers...
متن کاملPREVENTIVE EFFECTS OF VITAMIN B12 AND FOLIC ACID IN METHANOL-INDUCED RETINOPATHY IN AN ANIMAL MODEL
In order to identify the effects of vitamin B 12 and folic acid in reducing methanolinduced retinopathy, ERG waves were compared before and after methanol intoxication in rabbits. In this study 34 rabbits were divided into 4 groups. All groups received 4 g/kg of methanol intraperitoneally. In addition, the second, third and fourth groups received vitamin B 12 injection, oral folic acid and ...
